Today, as I rest on my lunch break, I jump on the net only to find out that Adam Yauch, more popularly known as “MCA”, passed away in New York after almost a three year battle with Cancer. I am absolutely devastated. Beastie Boys were the first band to open my ears to hip hop. They were also one of the first to open my ears altogether to a huge range of different musical styles other than the hits I was hearing on the radio. Rhymes spat out from MCA even encouraged me to try a hand at writing as well instead of just playing the guitar. Even though I don’t rhyme half the time and I don’t write lyrics for anything remotely hip hop, it’s still safe to say that listening to MCA spit hot fire made a huge contribution to me eventually choosing to build a career in the music industry.
Adam Yauch was a pioneer, correction, still is a pioneer and encouraged all of us that grew up listening to the Beastie Boys in one way or another. He was a great man that not only created music for our ears but actually made a difference in the world. He has left a mark on the world that will never disappear and continue to positively affect for generations to come. I, personally will make sure that my kids know of The Beastie Boys and MCA and the huge contribution they made to the music industry and even the world. He leaves behind a wife and daughter and I send out my best wishes to them.
Rest In Peace Adam “MCA” Yauch. You are truly a legend and will never be forgotten.
